They are published for educational context on price ranges, not as verified third-party reviews of specific companies.

Residential Lockout Reports

"Locked out of my Chicago condo at 9pm. Called three companies. Quotes were $90, $135, and $340. Chose the $135 option because the $90 felt risky and the $340 had no explanation. Turned out $135 was exactly in the regional evening range I read about here."

The Three Most Common Overcharge Scenarios

Looking across all submitted reports, three scenarios generate the majority of overcharge complaints.

01

Low phone quote, high on-site bill

The most common pattern. The $25–$45 phone quote becomes $200–$400 after the technician cites "complex lock," "drilling required," or "special cylinder needed." Prevention: insist on a firm all-in quote by text before authorizing dispatch. Walk away if a firm quote is refused.

02

Unnecessary replacement upsell

A service that should be a $100 lockout becomes a $350 lock replacement because the technician claims the lock "cannot be picked without damage" or "needs to be drilled." Standard residential pin-tumbler deadbolts can almost always be picked or bypassed without drilling.

03

Cash payment pressure

Insistence on cash removes all recourse. Credit card payments allow chargebacks with documentation if the final charge significantly exceeds the quoted price. This is the single most effective tactical protection against overcharge outcomes.
